In my mind 2020 was the year solo board gaming went from being something of a novelty to the centre of attention, as evident by the fact that several of the nominations for the 2021 Spiel des Jahres are board game designs that feature cooperation or solitaire play. Earlier in May Harald Schrapers and Christoph Schlewinski, chairmen of the jury, announced on social media the nominations for each of the three categories as follows:
